Singular and Plural in Chinese

Unlike English, Chinese nouns usually do not change form when they become plural.

The word itself stays the same.

Talking About One Person or Thing

For one person:

一个人Yí ge rén one person

一个朋友Yí ge péng you one friend

一本书Yì běn shū one book

一杯茶Yì bēi chá one cup of tea

The noun stays exactly the same. The number tells us that we are talking about one item.

Talking About More Than One Person or Thing

To make something plural, you usually just change the number.

两个人Liǎng ge rén two people

三个朋友Sān ge péng you three friends

五本书Wǔ běn shū five books

两杯茶Liǎng bēi chá two cups of tea

Notice that:

  • 人 (rén) stays 人

  • 朋友 (péng you) stays 朋友

  • 书 (shū) stays 书

  • 茶 (chá) stays 茶

The noun does not become different.

What About “They” in Chinese?

When talking about people, Chinese has a special plural marker: 们 (men).

For example:

me

我们Wǒ men we / us

you

你们 Nǐ men you all

he

他们 Tā men they

However, 们 is mainly used for people, not things.

You can say:

他们是我的朋友。Tā men shì wǒ de péng you. They are my friends.

But you normally would not say:

❌ 书们 (shūmen)❌ 杯子们 (bēizi men)

Instead, simply use a number or words like “many”:

很多书 Hěn duō shū many books

很多杯子 Hěn duō bēi zi many cups

A Simple Conversation

A: 这是什么?Zhè shì shén me? What is this?

B: 这是一本书。Zhè shì yì běn shū. This is a book.

A: 那是什么?Nà shì shénme? What is that?

B: 那是两本书。Nà shì liǎng běn shū.Those are two books.

Practice Tip

Read these examples aloud several times. Focus on the rhythm and pronunciation rather than trying to memorize everything at once.

After practicing, try looking around your room and naming objects in Chinese:

  • 一本书 (yì běn shū) — one book

  • 两个杯子 (liǎng ge bēizi) — two cups

  • 三张桌子 (sān zhāng zhuōzi) — three tables

The more you connect Chinese with the world around you, the more natural the language becomes.

Learning a language is not just memorizing words. It is learning a new way to see and describe the world around you.
