Learn Chinese - Conversation Opener

When you go to China or any Chinese -speaking region, and we hope you will soon, one of the first things you will want to do is to meet people and strike up a friendly conversation . To do this you will need some handy expressions for conversation openers.

You don’t need to have perfect Chinese to connect with people. A few simple expressions, a smile, and genuine curiosity can open many doors.

Here are some useful phrases you can use to begin everyday conversations.

1. Starting with a Greeting

你好!(Nǐ hǎo!). Hello!

你好,很高兴认识你。Nǐ hǎo, hěn gāo xìng rèn shi nǐ. Hello! Nice to meet you.

你叫什么名字?Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? What is your name?

我叫……Wǒ jiào…My name is…

Example:

A: 你好!你叫什么名字?Nǐ hǎo! Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?Hello! What is your name?

B: 我叫David。你呢?Wǒ jiào David. Nǐ ne?My name is David. How about you?

2. Showing Interest in Someone

Chinese people often enjoy sharing where they are from, their hometown, and their experiences.

你是哪里人?Nǐ shì nǎlǐ rén?Where are you from?

我是美国人。Wǒ shì Měiguó rén.I am American.

你住在哪里?Nǐ zhù zài nǎlǐ?Where do you live?

你来这里多久了?Nǐ lái zhèlǐ duō jiǔ le?How long have you been here?

3. Talking About Travel

Travel is one of the easiest ways to start a conversation.

你喜欢旅游吗?Nǐ xǐhuān lǚyóu ma?Do you like traveling?

我很喜欢中国。Wǒ hěn xǐhuān Zhōngguó.I really like China.

这是我第一次来中国。Zhè shì wǒ dì yī cì lái Zhōngguó.This is my first time visiting China.

你推荐什么地方?Nǐ tuījiàn shénme dìfang? What place do you recommend?

4. Complimenting and Building Connection

A sincere compliment is a great conversation starter.

这里很漂亮。Zhèlǐ hěn piàoliang. This place is beautiful.

这个很好吃!Zhège hěn hǎochī!This is delicious!

你的中文很好!Nǐ de Zhōngwén hěn hǎo!Your Chinese is very good!

(And if someone says this to you, you can smile and say:)

谢谢,我还在学习。Xièxie, wǒ hái zài xuéxí. Thank you, I’m still learning.

Practice Tip: Make the Language Yours

Read these conversations aloud several times and imitate the sounds as naturally as possible. The more you repeat them, the more comfortable they will become.

When you feel confident, try saying them without looking at the words. Practice while doing everyday activities—such as driving, walking, or taking a shower.

The goal is not perfect pronunciation on the first day. The goal is to make these expressions feel natural so that when you meet someone, the words are ready to come out.

Remember: every conversation begins with a small bridge.

一个小小的开始,可以带来一次新的连接。A small beginning can create a new connection.
